Common Electrical Defects Found in Northeast Ohio Homes

When purchasing a home, the electrical system is one of the most important components to evaluate. While many electrical issues remain hidden behind walls or inside electrical panels, a professional home inspection can identify many common defects that could impact safety, reliability, and future repair costs.

1. Double-Tapped Circuit Breakers



One of the most frequently observed defects is a double-tapped breaker, where two conductors are installed under a breaker terminal designed for only one conductor.


This condition can result in:

  • Loose electrical connections

  • Overheating

  • Arcing

  • Increased fire risk


While some breaker manufacturers permit two conductors under specific breaker models, many do not. Determining whether the installation is acceptable requires verification of the panel and breaker manufacturer’s listing.



2. Missing or Improper Grounding and Bonding


Grounding and bonding protect occupants by providing a safe path for fault current.


Common problems include:

  • Missing grounding electrode conductors

  • Improper bonding of water piping

  • Missing bonding jumpers around water meters

  • Improper grounding electrode connections

  • Detached grounding conductors


Improper grounding may not affect everyday operation but can significantly reduce protection during an electrical fault.


3. Open Junction Boxes



Electrical splices should always be contained inside an approved junction box with an installed cover.


Open junction boxes expose energized wiring, increasing the likelihood of:

  • Accidental contact

  • Electrical shock

  • Fire hazards

  • Physical damage to wiring


This is a relatively inexpensive repair but an important safety concern.


4. Overcrowded Electrical Panels



Over time, homeowners often add circuits for new appliances, finished basements, garages, or workshops.


Common signs include:

  • Multiple conductors under terminals not designed for them

  • Excessive wire congestion

  • Improper breaker types

  • Homemade wiring modifications


Crowded panels can make servicing difficult and increase the likelihood of improper installations.


5. Aluminum Branch Wiring



Some homes built primarily during the late 1960s and early 1970s contain solid aluminum branch circuit wiring. While aluminum wiring itself is not automatically unsafe, improper connections can loosen over time due to thermal expansion, creating overheating and arcing hazards. When aluminum wiring is present, further evaluation by a qualified electrician is often recommended.


6. Federal Pacific and Zinsco Electrical Panels


Certain older electrical panels have documented histories of reliability concerns.


These include:

  • Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok® panels

  • Zinsco/Sylvania-Zinsco panels


Although many remain in service, these panels have been associated with breakers that may fail to trip under overload conditions. Many insurance companies also view these panels as undesirable. A home inspection can identify these panel types so buyers understand the potential implications.


7. Improper GFCI Protection


Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) help protect people from electrical shock.


Current standards generally require GFCI protection in areas such as:

  • Bathrooms

  • Kitchens

  • Garages

  • Basements

  • Crawl spaces

  • Laundry areas

  • Exterior receptacles


Common issues include:

  • Missing GFCI protection

  • Non-functioning devices

  • Reversed line/load wiring

  • Improper installation


Testing these devices is a routine part of a comprehensive home inspection.


8. Missing AFCI Protection


Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) reduce the risk of fires caused by damaged or deteriorated wiring.

Although older homes were not originally required to have AFCI protection, newer homes and remodeled electrical systems often should include them.

During an inspection, we note where AFCI protection appears absent or where AFCI breakers fail their functional tests.


9. Reversed Polarity and Open Grounds


Using specialized electrical testing equipment, inspectors frequently discover:

  • Reversed hot and neutral conductors

  • Open grounds

  • Open neutrals

  • Improperly wired receptacles


These defects may not be visible to homeowners but can affect appliance operation and electrical safety.


10. Improperly Installed Service Entrance Cables



The service entrance brings electricity from the utility to the home’s electrical panel.


Common deficiencies include:

  • Damaged service cables

  • Missing drip loops

  • Inadequate clearances

  • Loose mast connections

  • Deteriorated weatherheads


Because these components are exposed to the elements year-round, deterioration is not uncommon in older homes throughout Northeast Ohio.


11. Unsafe DIY Electrical Repairs


Many homes contain evidence of well-intentioned

but improper homeowner electrical work.


Examples include:

  • Wire nuts outside junction boxes

  • Extension cords used as permanent wiring

  • Improper cable supports

  • Incorrect breaker sizes

  • Mixed wire sizes on circuits

  • Unsecured electrical cables

  • Improper neutral and ground terminations


Even seemingly minor electrical shortcuts can create significant safety concerns.


12. Improper Backfeeding of Panels



Another condition occasionally encountered is backfeeding, where branch circuit conductors are connected directly to the main lugs of another panel without a properly sized overcurrent protective device. Unless specifically designed and protected in accordance with applicable electrical standards, this installation can allow conductors to be energized without adequate overcurrent protection and should be evaluated by a qualified electrician.
